If you’re heading out on open water, it’s always worth having a drogue, sea anchor or both onboard. Not only can they assist with leisurely activities such as fishing and resting, but they are also necessary if weather conditions worsen.

Even though drogues and sea anchors are similar in their design and application, there are differences between the two that are worth noting. Manufacturers produce both out of similar material and they both emulate a parachute design. However, vessels deploy a drogue from the stern, increasing drag and reducing speed in strong winds and sea conditions, whereas vessels deploy a sea anchor from the bow. This creates a drag that reduces drift and keeps the bow directed into the wind - primarily used to wait out storms safely.
