Most modern boat builds are fairly well sealed, but sealing the bilge area too well can lead to poor ventilation. It's for this reason that you may still see some amount of bilge water accumulating in your boat.
Not only is removing this water crucial to keeping your boat afloat, it also reduces the chance of water becoming stale, polluted and smelly. Automatic bilge pumps are a necessity if you want to remove this water as soon as it starts to build up.
These types of pump setups do require maintenance, and should be checked regularly. As it’s a piece of equipment that is heavily relied on for the functionality of your boat and the safety of those on board, it’s worth ensuring it’s in working order every single time you head out.
